| British small silver coins remained 100% sterling silver until 1920 when the content was reduced to 50% to repay United Kingdom war debts. The content was completely removed in World War II for the same reason and from then these Great Britain coins were cupro-nickel. |
| SHILLINGS. Henry VII (c1487) issued an English silver coin called the testoon at that time worth 12 English pence - the ancestor of the shilling. The first English shillings (fixed value 12 pence) were issued under Edward VI (1549). These shillings were amongst the earliest dated (Roman numerals) British coins. In 1551 English shillings were minted also showing the value in Roman numerals (XII). From then until decimalisation Great Britain shillings enjoyed almost unbroken continuity of minting.
