| Before horse-powered, eventually steam-powered, coin mills British coins were handmade. A metal disk (planchet) was handcut and placed between obverse and reverse dies then hit with a massive hammer! (Hence, "hammered".) Compared to modern British coins, British hammered coins have inferior quality. English hammered coins often have irregular planchets, weak areas due to poor hammering, double strikes (hammered twice!), and weak portraits - such coins are worth far less than clearly struck coins. A common, illegal, practice was to
clip edges of hammered coins, use the coin at full value, and save the clippings. Heavily clipped English hammered coins are also worth far less than superb specimens. Hence, British hammered coins are difficult to grade.
