| Before James I copper was considered too base for the English monarch's image! However, due to small change shortage, and impracticably small silver coins, hammered copper farthings (quarter pennies) were introduced. Under later British monarchs copper halfpennies were milled and the Britannia motif appeared. "Cartwheel" halfpennies appeared in 1799 - minted using steam power by Matthew Boulton and James Watt at Soho, Birmingham. The size of the British halfpenny was reduced in 1806 and 1807. United Kingdom copper halfpennies were produced until 1860 when smaller, bronze (more durable) halfpennies were introduced. Halfpennies were minted until 1967.
