| SOVEREIGNS. The first English gold sovereigns were minted by Henry VII (1489) nominally of value one pound. Sovereigns continue to be
minted. The modern British sovereign includes a classical design, with an underlying political victory statement, by Benedetto Pistrucci - Saint George (England) slaying the dragon (the "monster of Europe" otherwise Napoleon Bonaparte). As well as in London (UK) sovereigns were also minted at Ottawa (Canada); Bombay (India); Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth (Australia); and Pretoria (South Africa) - these have small mintmarks identifying the mint. Specifications for modern British sovereigns (from 1817 onwards): diameter 22.05 mm; weight 7.98 gm; 22 carat gold (91.7%); gold content 0.2354 troy ounces.
