| The British florin silver coin (1/10th of a pound) was first minted in 1848 under Queen Victoria as a first Victorian step towards British decimalisation. Florins remained 100% sterling silver until 1920 when reduced to 50% to repay United Kingdom war debts. The silver content was completely removed in World War II for the same reason and from then British florins were cupro-nickel. The actual value of a Great Britain florin was 2 shillings. The 1848 design caused immediate controversy! "Dei Gratia" (latin for "By the Grace of God"), was omitted - hence, these florins are called "graceless" florins.
