| Before James I copper was considered too base for the English monarch's image! However, due to small change shortage, and impracticably small silver coins, hammered copper farthings (quarter pennies) were introduced (see hammered coin section). Under later British monarchs copper farthings were milled and the Britannia motif appeared. "Cartwheel" farthings were minted in 1799 but the size was slightly reduced in 1806 and 1807. United Kingdom copper farthings were produced until 1860 when even smaller, bronze (more durable) farthings were introduced. The farthing was discontinued in 1956. During the reigns of George IV and William IV half farthings were minted in 1828, 1830, and 1837 for use in Ceylon and third farthings in 1827,and 1835 for use in Malta. Under Victoria half-farthings were minted 1839-1868; third farthings 1844-1868 and 1866-1885; and quarter farthings for Ceylon 1839-1853. Third farthings were also minted under Edward VII and George V in 1902 and 1913.
