| CROWNS. Hammered, English gold crowns were issued first by Henry VIII - gold crowns continued to be minted until Charles II (1662). Hammered, English silver crowns (the largest British silver coins) were first minted by Edward VI (1551) and remained 100% sterling silver until 1920 when the content was reduced to 50% to repay United Kingdom war debts. The silver content was completely removed during World War II for the same reason and from then on Great Britain crowns issued until decimalisation (1968) were cupro-nickel. The actual value of a British crown was 5 shillings (60 pence) in other words 1/4th of a British pound.
