| Before James I copper was considered too base for the English monarch's image! However, due to small change shortage, and impracticably small silver coins, hammered copper farthings (quarter pennies) were introduced. Under later British monarchs copper farthings and halfpennies were milled and the Britannia motif appeared. The first British copper pennies and twopences appeared
in 1797 - minted using steam power by Matthew Boulton and James Watt at Soho, Birmingham. These coins weighed 1 and 2 ounces respectively (their full copper value) - because of this they were called "cartwheels". These heavy coins were impracticable (but now
very collectable!) - imagine a pocketfull as loose change! |
